ACMI Wayfinding & Signage

Posted 24/02/2009

We are very fortunate to have won the tender for the design of wayfinding, graphics & signage for the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) at Federation Square. A great opportunity for the studio to build upon ACMI’s unique cultural position in Melbourne by creating a legible, sophisticated wayfinding & signage solution for this very dynamic complex environment. We jumped into the project head first this week, with Nick onsite performing the audits, interviews and research, and will keep the blog updated with progress as design commences….

SonicWaves typeface

SonicWaves is a super nice type experiment created from sound waves. Initiated by Edgar Walthert from the Netherlands, for a audio-visual exhibition Into Infinity, it sounds as attractive as it looks. A link to his site can be found here to view (and hear) the final product.

Incomprehensible

Posted 11/02/2009

It has been an incredibly tragic week for those affected by the fires, the rapid loss of life and community is just incomprehensible. We have decided to take a lead from Coles Friday 13th donation and donate Fridays income to the Red Cross Appeal, its a little bit from us, for those that have lost everything…

Royal Children’s Hospital Wayfinding

Posted 05/02/2009

We have kicked into overdrive recently working up the thematic concept which will drive the wayfinding and signage design for the new Royal Children’s Hosptial in Flemington. Traditionally, hospitals are some of the most challenging environments to navigate with often unfamiliar processes, technical terminology and heightened stress levels. When combined with extensive circulation corridors across multiple levels, getting lost is very straight forward! The new RCH, however, will avoid such issues with a sophisticated wayfinding strategy written by Finn Butler, that has been developed as an integral part of the overall facility design with Bates Smart. We are just entering a very complex but incredibly exciting concept design phase, so will keep the blog updated with progress……

Troika T5 Installation

Posted 03/02/2009

One of my favourite, most inspirational studios is Troika from the UK. The video & images below show their latest installation at Terminal 5 Heathrow Airport. The sculpture is positioned in the lounge between the elevators, and Troika determined that moving up and down the elevators was like take off and landing, and needed some clouds to complete the experience… Very clever folks…

Materialscape

Posted 03/02/2009

Materialscape is a materials trade show running alongside Design;Made;Trade at this years State of Design Festival. The event is aiming to unveil the design versatility of materials for surfaces and finishes in the Interior Design & Architectural market. Our identity explores the notion that material and space are codependent in their reliance on the other to create form. This idea has inspired us to look at how the materials appear, before being formed into space, before being transformed for Materialscape. The commonality is their raw industrial packaged state, and as such we have taken what binds them together, the packing tape as an instantly recognizable visual tool to build the logotype.

The packaging tape allows us to further develop the logotype into event graphics, signage, and potentially even into illustrations to entice & describe the event. A cohesion between DMT and Materialscapes has been considered, where one appears as a fluid barcode ribbon, the other appears as dynamic band.
