X-Mas tree in the press

Posted 31/03/2009

Our studio project the Green X-Mas tree was far more popular than we expected when we launched it Christmas time 2007, in 2008 we ran out of stock and this year we are redesigning, re-engineering and repackaging with an expanded range, to be released in October. The old design continues to pop up in press though, this time in AT Magazine out of Tel-Aviv…

McAuley Community Services for Women

Posted 24/03/2009

MCSW approached us to design a brandmark and identity which reflect the multi-faceted nature of the organisation. McAuley Community Services for Women provide accommodation, services, advocacy and support for homeless women their accompanying children who have experienced family violence.

The flower motif we developed signifies hope and joy, as well as re-growth and new beginnings. The Mercy Cross is integrated into the brandmark to denote MCSW’s association with the Sisters of Mercy Melbourne Congregation.

The new film by Gary Hustwit (who also produced the Helvetica movie) is out, an in-depth documentary about manufactured objects and the people who design them… It features a couple of my favourite designers such as Naoto Fukasawa, Hella Jongerius and the grand master Dieter Rams… From the site “It’s a look at the creativity at work behind everything from toothbrushes to tech gadgets. It’s about the designers who re-examine, re-evaluate and re-invent our manufactured environment on a daily basis. It’s about personal expression, identity, consumerism, and sustainability”.

Design by committee

Posted 15/03/2009

A lot of our time is spent in the process of designing, and a lot of our time is spent on fine tuning the delivery of our concepts to our clients. At an AGDA drinks night last week that we hosted I ended up in a conversation where someone was telling me that the financial crisis had made their clients nervous and less willing to take risks…

This bothered me at the time, and has been playing on my mind since. So, as I watched The Fountainhead today, it crystallized for me; there are no risks if the concept is sound, developed with rigor and delivered to the client considerately… If risk is the probability of certain eventualities, then we as designers are responsible for analyzing these eventualities, and making informed design decisions based on these. Perhaps Gary Cooper’s vision would have been built after all, if only he’d predicted the risk his client posed! Great film.

Some preliminary images of our signage designed for the Auburn Hospital in NSW have just arrived from the client. Not much detail yet but nice to see the legibility and colour contrast working well within the environment. The rest of the project images will be online shortly.
